ITIN with a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) · Nationwide

Need an ITIN Number? Here's everything, no runaround

The complete ITIN guide from an IRS Enrolled Agent: how to get your ITIN number, how to renew it, the W-7 form step by step, and what an ITIN does and does not let you do.

With an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)

We handle your ITIN — you keep your passport

We are IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agents (CAAs). That means we prepare and submit your Form W-7 for you, and we authenticate your documents ourselves. What goes to the IRS is a Certificate of Accuracy(Form W-7 COA) in place of your originals.

Your passport does not travel to the IRS. You hand it to us, we review and certify it, and we return it to you the same day — you don't have to mail your original passport to the IRS and wait weeks to get it back.

If you work, raise a family, or run a business here but do not qualify for a Social Security Number, the ITIN Number is the key to filing your taxes and staying in good standing. This page pulls together everything people ask across the desk: how to get one, how to renew it, how to fill out the W-7 form without mistakes, and what an ITIN does and does not open up for you.

First, the part that matters: an ITIN does not ask about your immigration status and does not change it — it is for taxes only. In the eyes of the IRS, we all file the same.

The articles below give you the full do-it-yourself path. If you would rather we handle it, we are a firm with an IRS Enrolled Agent (the highest credential the IRS grants) and we serve you in Spanish or English. Come to JD Tax or go wherever you prefer — just never pay anyone for the W-7 form itself: the IRS does not charge to assign the number.

Questions people always ask

How much does it cost?
Every case is different, so we don't post a list price that won't fit your situation. We look at what you need and give you the exact price before we start — no surprises.
How long does it take?
The number is issued by the IRS, not by us. According to the IRS, allow about 7 weeks to be notified of your ITIN status, and 9 to 11 weeks during peak season (January 15 through April 30) or if you file from overseas.
Does it work for my spouse and dependents?
Yes. For your spouse we authenticate their identification documents just like yours (except a foreign military ID card). For dependents, the IRS only lets us authenticate the passport and the civil birth certificate; any other dependent document is mailed as an original to the IRS, which returns it to you by mail. We tell you exactly what applies to your family before we start.
